Rigid Photopolymer 3D Printing (PolyJet)

Xometry offers PolyJet rigid photopolymer (PJ3D), which is a 3D printing technology that builds parts out of a UV-curable resin with high detail and the ability to apply different material properties. PJ3D works similar to an inkjet printer, where thousands of micro-dots of material are deposited and cured, layer by layer, to build a part from the bottom to the top. This process is best for test-fitting parts before moving to tooling, or getting the feel of a rubbery or overmolded piece. One of the most underrated aspects of PolyJet is the ability to build multi-material parts which can have both rigid and rubber-like features on one print!

Here are the basic tolerances:

  • +/- 0.004", or +/- 0.001" per inch, whichever is greater. Build area up to 19 x 15 x 7"
  • PJ3D is a very fine detailed and accurate process. Although the material is not as robust as the FDM or SLS thermoplastics, the rigid and rubber-like photopolymers have the highest detail resolution for features like text, surface, and lip seals. PJ3D prints in 0.0012" layers (30 um). This process works best for final fit-checks before molding, highly detailed pieces, and parts that are used as sales models.

If you plan on painting your PolyJet part, it is recommend to go over it thoroughly with a wet abrasive pad to remove remnants of its gel-like support material. If your part requires more mechanical strength or high durability, you may want to consider other processes like SLS or FDM.
